His version focused on the more mythical elements of ancient Rome and would have seen Maximus enter the afterlife only to encounter other souls who have ascended even further.
Emperor Geta: The Gods have SPOKE!
He is eventually tasked by Jupiter and the other Roman gods to return to Earth to find and kill Hephaestus, the former god who betrayed them. From there he wakes up as a Christian and has to travel back to Rome on a mission to stop the spread of Christianity until he meets the new emperor Lucius. The film ends with Maximus cursed forever, including a montage of the soldier who fought through the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War. In the end, a modern-day Maximus is revealed, working in the Pentagon in Washington. The studio decided not to accept this version, but the script is available online.

I was lucky enough to attend an early screening here in New York, so let’s start with the obvious. Gladiator 2 has excellent CGI & practical implications. Sometimes you feel like you are in Rome. Denzel does a great job in his role and is nominated for an Oscar, and blood & it’s fun there. What’s not to like about a Roman gladiator chopping off his head in THEE Colosseum?
Now the downsides
Paul Mezcal, a phenomenal actor, failed to achieve what I wanted from him in the film. Without giving up the plot, he shines in individual scenes and compliments his co-stars well. However, he could have done better in group settings where he had to be the catalyst for the scene. “As a Director”; throughout the film that fuels rebellion, rebellion, etc. rumble, we expect a draw from him.
The story is above average but could be better
However, at no point did he want to follow him. This might be confusing, but when the only character I have a crush on doesn’t make me want to jump into a fight, it misses the point. It complements the bones of the original film and offers fan service, but is by no means a stand-alone marvel compared to its predecessor. The musical score was solid, but Dune Part 2 could have taken notes on how to get the audience goosebumps during its most pivotal scenes. Overall, it’s a good follow-up to the original Gladiator, one of the best movies of 2024, and it’s getting some Oscar buzz, but it’s not what it could have been, which is a masterpiece.
